Gem cost may be there as a convenience so you can't shift embeds around willy-nilly. I see the point about being forced to remove embeds before upgrading though, and I'll bring it up. Thanks for pointing this out.
This is what beta is all about.

I see that the intended use of this was so people would not shift their jewels around the gear.
But Dawn, each jewel only can be put into 1 specific gear. One would just take out the whole equipment piece and move it to the desired hero.
In any case, requiring to pay a lot of gems to remove high level jewels in order to craft to a higher level of gear is, as what justified had called it, "double dipping".
Hoping this can be remedied soon. Thanks so much.
I just spoke to our lead developer, Tony, about this and he said it is a bug that you have to remove the gem to upgrade purple armor. The Gem cost to remove a jewel is intended, but you should be able to upgrade the armor without removing it. It will be fixed in a patch in the near future.
That is good news about the upgrade but does not solve the whole question as to why you have to pay twice to remove a gem that is embedded. Who cares if someone removes a gem to place on a different hero everyday. They should not have to pay twice for it.
Here is my scenario. I finally merged my gems into a lvl4. Now as I go along I am working on getting the gems needed to merge that 4 into a 5 and so on. I had to pay to get the gems to begin with, I am having to pay to get the gems needed to merge to create a higher gem. And now you are telling me that I have to pay to remove that gem just in order to merge that gem to create a higher gem. That is complete BS.
I completely agree, using gems to remove these items is a bit ridiculous.
If you must have to pay for them to be removed, at least make it gold or credits, something readily available...
I am very happy to report this has been fixed! :)
One does not need to remove embeds to craft an item to a higher level anymore!
Woot woot.. more power to the Tynon team!
Is there any possibility of them being able to make it so that you can also upgrade the gem right from the armor screen. Say I get 4 lvl 4 rubies and have a level 4 ruby on my mages staff. I then have to pay another 100 gems just to get that 5th one off to upgrade after I already put in the coin to make that gem in the first place. If not, it sucks, but I'll understand, it's just a suggestion.
