Is the betting in Championship supposed to take the gems for increased bets? Seems kind of contrary to the idea of winning a bet, which is you get your stake plus something. I figured if I won it would at least return the gems, ah well.

You're paying to increase the stake of the bet.
You're not betting gems.
So I am throwing away rare gems to up a bet to get minimal numbers of additional Tickets. 10 gems for a "chance" of an additional 500 tickets maybe.
Gems aren't rare.
Correct. No one said all gem usage in the game was even or better yet even wise to do.
only problem i see here, is technically ur gambling with money... for a prize, i hope they got the require documents and fall inline with rules if there are any :)
Even when you lose the bet you still win more tickets. So your still paying for a gain, just a smaller one.
You gain a minimum of 5 gems per day, usually 10, sometimes up to 1k (if you're lucky) All of these are not paid for. Not to mention all the level, lab, quest, HP, etc....gem rewards. Gems do not have to be paid for, and if they are they are a fictional online currency non-redeemable for non-virtual items. They cannot be considered a currency (unlike Bitcoin which is redeemable for real goods and other currencies) No gambling here=equate it to online poker. You can usually pay real currency for more in game chips (currency) but you can not do the reverse, therefore not gambling.
Well, live and learn.
