What is the point of blocking if you still receive damage?
to counter the attack and reduce the dmg.. dodge is for no damage receive.
Think about it. In real life, if you block something, you still actually get hit, just not as bad. If you dodge something, you don't get hit all. This works in the land of pixels as well.
So the fact you still receive damage when blocking actually makes perfect sense. As late in the game as most people are, block stats are becoming increasingly important. A very high block rune and a few block saints on a hero can make them very tough.
Additionally, having a block rune reduces overall damage to you and prevents the opponent from gaining morale.
From casual testing, it seems not all damage is reduced all the time. Seems that normal physical damage is only reduced during a block, and certain skills can be reduced through block more than others. Biggest reduction seems to be on AOE skills like Thousand Strikes and Horns of Hell. Seems Flame Wall can be reduced quite a bit too, while the reduction on Piercing Thrust and Sweeping Flash and Frontal Assault is significantly less. In addition, it seems that the damage reduction does not benefit mages. Finally, damage reduction can be reduced if the opponent has high break (which makes sense, since break counters block), which is why using infallibility/reliability on Adam increases Thousand Strikes damage more vs. some heroes than others.
My resistance runes reduce all physical damage taken by about 15-20% all of the time, I haven't done the math for skill attacks so I can't speak to it.
I guess blocking does help, but I think it was just getting to me that my heros would dodge until until health is low, then they would block and still die.
I'm not quite sure what you mean here. I've never seen a single-target physical skill, such as driving blow or ambush or rallying strike or continuous rage be blocked either, although very rarely I've seen Heart of Darkness and Horns of Hell blocked.
Also I have never seen any of my mages block, even when I used resistance runes, which does boost their overall power.
