You get a lot of advantage as VIP, but you have to be very lucky aswell. And some have more luck then others. In the last server I started, I got into the strongest guild of the server (as it is today). There are non paying players that started on the same day, less active as I am (based on lvl / exp), but they are 50% stronger just because they were more lucky in the tavern and rune temple.
