no you dont have to pay any gems at all....just clik on the gem itself in the slot and a window will pop up asking to accept the removal or decline...this is the way u can merge and embed larger gems.
When you try to remove a gem of higher than level 3, that very same window shows how much it will cost.
A level 4 gem (embed) requires 100 gems to remove
A level 5 gem (embed) requires 200 gems to remove
and so on
Yup I have Guardian Sword I put 4 pcs Level 4 Obsidian, so nevermind since I am lvl 60 I'll just wait for Ironheart sword then.

Q: What were they thinking, when upgrading equipment, with Lv. 4(+) embedded jewels? A: Let’s force people to remove jewels embedded on equipment, to ultimately force them to pay 100 Gems (or more) to remove Lv. 4(+) embedded jewels. That is BS! The BARE MINIMUM that you NEED to do, to prevent pissing people off, is to warn them of the future cost of REMOVING the Lv. 4(+) jewel, DURING the embedding process, with a similar window that pops up, when you go to remove it, also the same warning before combining (5) Lv. 3(+) jewels into a Lv. 4(+) jewel; BARE MINIMUM!!!! That being said, you really should not be charged Gems in the first place, it's ridiculous!!!! You have effectively made the prize for 1st place in the Baal & Cerberus events an undesired aspiration, a curse, an unexpected crippling, to an otherwise, pleasant equipment upgrade experience. You have also wasted the time of people, who didn’t simply spend Gems to purchase the Lv. 4(+) jewels, but instead, got the Lv. 1 & 2 jewels & combined them to eventually come up with a Lv. 4(+) jewels; to what, get penalized? You should seriously keep whoever came up with this idea out of the “think tank”, maybe even downsize them; WORST IDEA EVER!!! (And I have step-kids, who were thinking of naming the baby celery).
Now I've been told that some people aren't charged the 100 Gems to upgrade equipment with Lv.4 jewels on it, because they don't have to remove the jewels, to upgrade it. What's going on with this game?
