Here is my scenario. I finally merged my gems into a lvl4. Now as I go along I am working on getting the gems needed to merge that 4 into a 5 and so on. I had to pay to get the gems to begin with, I am having to pay to get the gems needed to merge to create a higher gem. And now you are telling me that I have to pay to remove that gem just in order to merge that gem to create a higher gem. That is complete BS.
I understand your point. It may be better if Gems couldn't be removed from armor, only overwritten. That way it wouldn't seem like a money grab.
