What does the Direct Merge in the Blacksmith works?

I think I answered my own question and it cost me about 2,000 Gems I had one lvl 2 Topaz in the merge grid and hit the button. I ended up with a lvl 4 Topaz and about 2k fewer Gems. I could have bought it in the Fair for 140 Gems tops. Fo what does it do? It makes the Developers richer and me poorer . and there was no explanation or waning that my gems were going to be spent . The game asks me if I am sure I want to spend 1 Gem to open a slot for a rock in a weapon, but spends 2000 gems with no warning or confirmation. That is not right.

the Direct Merge works with the fact that it takes gems equal to how much jewels your missing and there value a lvl3 jewel costs 100 gems and you use Direct Merge with only 2 lvl3 jewels you will lose 300 gems as compensation to make the lvl4 jewel, my advice don't use it waste of gems, you are better of buying jewels in the fair and normal merging.

I wish I would have waited until some one had answered my original question before I tried it. I would gave a lot more Gems now.
