How many can I recruit? I wound up having to take soldiers early on but now I want to shoot for purple and gold. Is there a limit? and if so, can i dump the soldiers I have and replace them with better heros?

I didn't hear about any limit. You can't delete your heroes, so number of them is limitless. (Probably)

The extra soldiers make good rune holders for runes you don't want to combine but would rather keep for later, better heroes.
