Observations after a week
As of last night I claimed my final Beginner's Reward package, so I've now been playing (Law of Themis) for a week. Here's my observations from this play time.
Good:
1: Excellent system for pulling people in to play.
You start playing, and if you find it interesting, it is a very easy game to play and partake. A newbie has an equal chance of winning the top prize at a Lady Guinevere event if they pay attention. And there are plenty of chances at things to do for the first few days. You can spend an hour powering yourself up, and blast up through arena ranking and get on massive killing sprees, getting people really to enjoy the fighting.
2: Formation can make a huge difference, giving the ability for skilled players to compete at a higher level.
Due to the long-time gamer and smarty-pants in me, I tend to see patterns, and the formation is no different. The ability to analyze an enemy formation and switch around your formation in order to beat people or NPC of a much higher power level than you are is very nice. It has been pretty much the only thing keeping me in the arena second place spot, while sometimes knocking out the first place. And it's very helpful in Heroic Realm or Heaven Palace in order to fight against the toughest of the tough opponents.
3: You CAN go free-to-play and do good.
It is completely unnecessary to coin and compete to a somewhat high level of play. Due to gems being given out in arena, daily assistant payouts, Labyrinth payouts and quest rewards, as well as the large amount from beginner rewards, you can easily get going with lots of gems to work with, and get off to a good start. While you'll never be able to compete with the biggest spenders, you can at least feel somewhat powerful. And the amount of gems that they give you at first is actually quite briliiant, as you get used to spending gems here and there, and then once you're out, you have to either buy some, or alter your playstyle.
Bad:
1: The game is ruled by luck, and if you don't have luck, you need a substantial amount of skill to even start to keep up.
While I don't mind a luck based game, to a degree. When you are on the wrong side of the luck, it can become ridiculously hard to stay with those who have it. I have a guildmate and friend who started the day after I did, and has already pulled 17 purple/gold hero cards from the tavern. And a guildie who already has 15 yellow runes equipped and is waiting on reaching level 50 to equip some more. By that comparison, I know someone else who seems to be logged in nearly as much as I am, and has a single yellow rune. And I tend to have horrible luck in the tavern, sometime spending 5m credits+ and seeing maybe 1-2 purple/gold heroes, and my recruit rate when seeing them is approximately ~1.5%. While I've managed to stay right up there due to a massive amounts of credits and coins put into temple/tavern, it is certainly not easy to stay with the #1 ranked player.
2:There are many glitches in the game, and many of them are serious.
Major event rewards are not being given out, or are given out twice. I have had my arena rank rewards paid out double three different times now, and the coin total stays at the elevated level until you spend underneath what you actually should have, at which point the game crashes, and you reload to have a couple thousand coins left. Ragnarok awards are not being consistently given out, I have personally missed three days in a row, and I know that I'm not the only one, as after the event, Speakers are being used to yell out "Where are my rewards!" by many people.
3: Legendary Keeper seems to have an abnormal percentage to give a blue.
At first I noticed it, and I figured that it was a little weird for the legendary keeper to give blues, considering he is the top one. So, I started counting. The level before the legendary keeper in 176 meetings has given me 21 fragments and 16 purples, with the rest being blue or green. That's a 12% chance to get a fragment, 9% to get a purple, and 81% to get blue/green. The Legendary keeper has given me in 48 meetings: 2 yellows, 2 fragments, 3 purples and the rest blues. That's 4% yellow, 4% fragment, 6% purple, and a whopping 86% for a blue. That the legendary keeper has a HIGHER chance than the level before of giving you one that you simply use to upgrade others is a bit ridiculous.
4: Coiners will always win.
This is become increasingly apparent in a battle I have with a guildmate for 1st place in events and arena. Each time that I close the gap, his power immediately increases by about 50k to pull back ahead of me, and make it so that I cannot win for another little while. While I understand that coins are how the game is supported (I am myself a VIP2), this ability for people to just buy their way to the top does become frustrating for those who cannot.
5: Event Timing
This is more of a minor annoyance. On the server I play, the arena ranking payout happens at the same time as Cerberus. This means that those preparing for Cerberus (which for me means different heroes and a different formation than PvP) are likely to get sneak attacked in the arena and lose position without being able to monitor it, since we are in the Cerberus zone trying to compete for 1st place. The Arena rankings should really happen at midnight, or some other time.
Tynon Staff: Hopefully you can fix the bugs within the game that are really ruining players experience before continuously launching new servers. If you launch TOO many new servers, there will never be any new influx of players to older server, and they will slowly die as people stop playing with nobody new coming into them, as the new players are shunted off to a new server.
