Short answer is no. Once recruited heroes stay with you for good.

you can have as many as you like you just need to strip them of all runes and armour and rest them into the inn and choose another in its place
Long time ago when we can recruit them free on tuesday, I had tried and I get more than 1k white hero, I just try to they have how many names for the white hero.
last time i counted i was at close to 400 heroes lol
we did it for fun back then and because it was free
