I don't think the devs at Tynon go "just for laughs lets screw this guy over".

If you win more cards, you're more likely to fail since probability means the more you have, the more you will have a chance at failure. As for the stars, I really don't think you're alone there. As soon as I fail on a star upgrade, I walk away from it. Hitting it like a demon just increases the fails.
