Hero power not making sense anymore.. what going on?

Recently I have been experiencing opponents with 1 million or more, LESS power than mine, about the same level... with runes that have less power than mine...
have been beating me. this makes no sense whatsoever.

    Their talents make difference.

if this game was just about power, it would be very very boring. You need to get power that actually makes your lineup powerful. For instance, lots of defensive power (runes/gear) on the last target your enemy will attack is basically worthless power. And damage power (runes/gear) on the first target is also basically worthless.

Right idea with these comments but not totally true. Alot of attack power in the front works for some occasions. Alot of defensive power in the back works for some occasions. This is the fun part of the game to me. Figuring out how to defeat different things with what I have to work with. If I add magic defense to this hero will it last one or 2 more rounds to finish killing off that enemy which will then allow me to do this. Etc Etc. There is no set rule that always works for everything in this game.

But having the wrong power on the wrong heroes can cause you lots of problems

I made no mention of front vs back. I said first and last attacked. That was on purpose. You do have to know what types of attacks are coming your way and how to best defend against them. And defensive stats are sometimes useful on damage dealers, since magic and skill shots can hit anywhere.

Power is irrelevant when the numbers are within ~40% of each other. Some of it depends on luck, some on formation, and some on your armor and rune setups. The player with the best setup will win most of the time, but that player doesn't have to have more power than the other one.

For instance, Morale grants zero power on its own, but adds a fair amount of real and noticeable power to PvP fights. If you take out two or three enemies before they even get a shot in, you've just mitigated a ton of damage. This is just one example of power numbers not matching up to actual fighting strength.

Something else that can make a big difference is where you position Calvin and what level Morale Rune he has.

Other things that can affect the result are:

    1. Positioning your Heroes to minimize the Morale buildup in your really strong opponent by not putting any one in front of him.
    2. Positioning your Heroes so you can kill a strong magic user fast.
    3. Putting a 'sacrificial' hero in front of someone with Piercing Thrust so that his skill attack does not damage other heroes.
    4. Staggering the formation front to back if you are facing someone with Sweeping slash.
    5. The list goes on and on.
