The problem isn't that you will get a level 1 chip or a map piece some of the time, the problem is that you will get it the majority of the time.
I would actually use chests if, on average, I got the stamina, coins, credits, 10 gems, or exp, and on the rare occasion would get a hero card. I would prefer not to get most of the former for my 100 contribution, but at least I wouldn't feel totally scammed such as I feel when I pay 100 contribution for a map piece or level 1 chip.

Could you be more specific a couple things were suggested:
removing level 1 chips from gold chests
having gold chests give more than 1 level 1 chip
removing maps from gold chests
having gold chests give a special map that can be used as left or right
increasing the amount of gems in gold chests
decreasing the frequency a map and level 1 chip appear in gold chests
removing maps from silver chests
and I believe a few others as well.
Just curious as to which suggestion(s) you felt were sensible dawn
and if these suggestions may get implemented?
Actually, what matt said about multiple chips makes sense. 2-3 lvl1 chips would be worthwhile.

If they added an option for a "Remove XXX for free Pass" I would quite literally have a Tynongasm.

That would be a great add to the game, i would even start to use gems on making better juvels
