Smoulder can be very effective if you are willing to commit to using magic attacks by building up your Illuminated mind in talents.
Yes, some people will dodge your attacks. Hitting three out of five is better than missing 1 out of 1.
Another advantage to smolder is that you don't need to wait on a morale bar to fill, you get the same attack every turn.

Wrong, Smoulder still sucks with high Magic attack and Illuminated mind talent, hate to bust peoples bubbles but its true, but I do agree that working on magic attack talents is a good thing....Because some day Tynon just might make a Mage worthwhile using.....they have not as yet. well cept for Shayd with her stun.

I wonder if Aphrodite will be good. I must say I hate how Tynon has treated mages. They trade higher base damage for no crit. Fine. They don't need to have a high, or any, base miss rate.
