There are many factors that are purely luck-based. Others are within your power to control. The more currency you have, the more lucky (over time) you can be, and some activities grant more return for currency (or time) invested than others.
I agree that there are few "crutch" mechanics in this game, and should be more interesting strategy decisions than "this hero stuns so they have to remain in my formation". It would be interesting to have debuffing heroes to reduce an enemy's chance to hit, or reduce their defenses.....essentially, ways to intelligently attack encounters without just relying on one mechanic, but using a combination of mechanics to achieve success.
