Character overwriting?

My friend "Terp" on the server 4 Thunder of Zeus has this problem where he had a crash of some sort and his browser history was cleaned i believe. When he logged onto his account and tried to connect to server 4 he only got the option to create a new character on his already existing account where the character "Terp" existed. What could this mean? Because as far as i know you cant have several characters on the same world on the same account?

He sent a ticket to support but i figured i'd post here as well to see if there was any simple solution to his problem.

The solution was to go ahead and create a new character on the same server your character disappeared from, once you got past the character creation menu your original character would just pop back up. Has your friend tried doing that yet?
