Mages use their skill attack every turn. Now we could debate lowering the damage back to melee levels in return for crits :P
Mages need two and a half things. The half thing is for Shayd and Smoulder's base hit rate to be a bit more normal, not as low as it is. Then mages need purple and at least one more gold hero. Then they need sapphires to add +magic damage as well as +skill damage.
Nobody really slots for magic resistance for pvp because mages are so weak in pvp.
.... I am fairly certain no where in my statement did I even suggest mages need skill attacks. My suggestion was that sapphire chips not only give +skill attacks but +magic attack as well. Since those two are mutually exclusive (ie, no one able to perform a skill attack gets an advantage from +magic damage and vice versa) there wouldn't be any balance issue, unless you feel that mages would be overpowered by adding a bit more damage to their attacks.
But no, mages don't need skill attacks. If they had even more base damage and not such a large base miss rate they would be pretty good. Even considering their squishiness.
