Redeem to recruit heros

Hiya sorry to disturb you all but I just started playing about 12 days and was wondering if any of you can help me out
I am at lvl 40 and all I got from haven taven are white heros. Some of my guildmates lower lever than me got gold heros. They told me even if I was not lucky to pick the gold hero if it appears on your deck you can redeem it with your spirit points. the trouble is from day 1 to present my spirit points are at 0 and the gold card did appear in my deck afew times was wondering if I missed out some steps or did it wrongly because I have never have any spirit points before.

To get spirits you need to refresh the tavern and it costs credits to do that. When you refresh you get some spirits for every purple or gold hero that shows up. The number of spirits you get depend on your level. Once you have enough spirits you can buy a hero's card by clicking on Redeem. You can only but the heroes that you have unlocked based on tout rank (not level). Different heroes cost different amount of spirits. When you click on Redeem it tell you how many spirits each hero costs.

Oh I see in order to get spirits I need to spend credits the refresh 1st? Thanks will try it out

try it on Tuesdays since if you are lucky enough to get a hero card after you pick a card you do not have to pay credits to get it.
