It appears that they fixed whatever bug it was that was allowing players to recruit heroes they had not unlocked from guild chests. I was cycling my chests for fun and never had a purple or gold show up that I have not unlocked show up. I know a few days ago I saw a few of the golds and purples show up that I had not recruited.
