Go into arena, hit a friend a number of times with nothing but your main and a mage (for simplicity). Afterwards, do the same but ask your friend to remove their block rune. See the damage increase? Good, step one is finished.

Step two: do the EXACT same test, both parts, except have a break rune on your mage. The damage before and after the block rune will not have changed in this scenario, unlike the first.

NOTE: make sure your friend in not changing their formation, so that each time you cast the spell it is on the same hero so that numbers will not be botched due to magic resistance differences.
I just tested it and what you claim is completely untrue. I asked a friend to put block on her main, and had my mage hit her. I noted down the scores, which were always from 10,000 to 11,000. When my friend removed her block rune, I tested it out again and the damage range was the same.

I AM A MYTHBUSTER! The break rune seems useless on a mage for the simple reason that block does not mitigate magic damage.
