    More on runes

As explained earlier, runes are the key to victory. Although there is not a specific set of runes that work best in all situations, some runes work well together. I will list a couple of "friendly runes" and explain why they should be used together and for what purpose. Note that I use the attributes, because different runes (of different quality) give the same attribute. What I say here is not true for all situations. As you progress, you will notice that you have to adapt to new heroes/skills your enemies have.

I encourage you to find out which heroes are predisposed to certain setups.

Block + Physical Attack + Critical Hit
The attribute "Block" does not only block; it gives you an opportunity to counter attack as well. This means that a good blocker has many opportunities to land hits during battles, especially against other physical attackers. As a result, good blockers should be good physical attackers as well.

    Hit Points + Dodge
Hit Points (HP) are used to make your heroes last as long as possible. Dodge is best coupled with HP because it is useful in all defensive situations. While block only works against physical attacks, dodge works against both physical and magic attacks. This does not mean that dodge is better than block, but it does mean that, in most cases, it will improve your hero's durability.

Hit Point + Physical Defence + Magic Defence + Dodge
This is an improved version of the previous duo. Whereas this leaves less room to add runes that improve your damage, this is a higly efficient set up for a durable tank. You hero is hard to hit and takes little damage when hit.

    Skill Attack + Morale
Your heroes use their skill attack when their morale bar is full. If you want to start off the battle with a skill attack, this is the duo you should use.

Skill Attack + Physical Attack + Critical Hit + Morale
This is an improved version of the previous duo. Not only do you start off the battle with a skill attack, but it deals a ****load of damage. This is a very aggressive set up. While it leaves little room for defence and makes your hero vulnerable, it can easily wipe out several enemy heroes in a single attack. Moreover, regular attacks will deal massive damage as well, often landing critical hits. This works well on heroes like Rhize and Dawnbringer. Such heroes must either begin the battle with a blow or beprotected by your formation.

    Magic Attack + Hit Rating
This is the basic duo you need on a mage hero. This is all you need to ensure that a mage will deal damage and actually hit the enemy. As slots open for more runes, you will add defensive runes to this, starting with HP and dodge if you can.

    More on formations

Formations are also key to victory. You will need to change your formation to adapt to different situations. Here are some formations that I used at different times and why.

    "O" means hero
    "X" means empty
Basic Defensive Formation / Anti Sweeping Slash Formation

    OOX............XXX
    OOO.....or....OOO
    XXX............OOX

This formation is a very good defensive formation for many battle situations. The front row-middle line hero needs to be a tank. This hero's job is to absorb damage. The hero who's frontline in the other line also needs to be a bit tankish. In most cases, enemy heroes will have to face this hero before facing any other hero. In fact, unless there are enemy heroes on the same as your two units, they will all have to face your tank first. This means that you can boost your offense on your other heroes without having to worry too much about them being hit. This formation works well against enemies who heroes use like Dawnbringer and Valla because, in most cases, they will only hit one unit, thereby negating the special effect of their skill attack. By switching between the first and second possibilities of this formation, you can always make sure that Sweeping Slash is useless. This formation is weak, however, against heroes like Rhize and Vipsanius Agrippa because there is a line of three ready to get crushed.

    All-Around Defensive Formation

    OOX............XOX............OXO............XXO
    OXO.....or....OXO.....or.....OOX.....or....OOX
    XOX............OOX............XXO............OXO

These 4 formations are all, in essence, the same formation. I will present variants of these in the examples further down. I want you, however, to understand the basic rules of this set up. This formation minimizes Rhize's and Agrippa's Piercing Thrust because there is no line of three. This means that you will want to use this formation when you start encountering enemy players who use these heroes. It is weaker against Sweeping Slash than the preceding formation, but it also take it into account. If you watch closely all 4 formations, it's always the same two heroes that can be hit simultaneously by this skill. This means that those two heroes must be tankish. The other frontline hero (who is on a different vertical line) must also be tankish. The two remaining heroes in the back row must be all-offensive (with the exception, perhaps, of a vitality/dodge rune).

When attacking a player, you can play a bit with this formation, which relies on 3 Tanks and 2 Massive Damage Dealers, to always neglect both Sweeping Slash AND Piercing Thrust (unless there are two heroes with the same skill in the enemy's formation)

Here are some examples. The left is the attacker's formation (your formation), and the right is the defender's formation (your enemy). "P" means Piercing Thrust unit and "S" means Sweeping Slash unit. There will only be two units in the enemy's formation, as these are the main units you should pay attention to when preparing for an attack. In all of the following examples, the enemy's skill attacks are useless.

    XXO.....PXS
    OOX.....XXX
    OOX.....XXX

    XXO.....PXX
    OOX.....XSX
    OXO.....XXX

    XXO.....PXX
    OXO.....XXX
    OOX.....XSX

    OOX.....XSX
    XXO.....PXX
    OXO.....XXX
As you can see, the hero facing the Sweeping Slash enemy needs to be on a vertical line of his own while the hero facing the Piercing Thrust enemy needs to be on a horizontal line of his own. The 4 formations provided at the beginning of this section should be used in defensive situations or in situations when you cannot tell what your enemy's formation will be. Although they are not as adapted as the previous ones, you can prepare better by knowing which heroes can be hit be what. You should choose one of the 4 formations based on the order you want your units to attack. Switching between formations every now and then is a good idea to surprise an enemy who is used to attacking you.
