I did not attack anyone, and the timer certainly did not run out. However, I lost my shield (protection from PvP) when I stopped grinding, and went to the Caribbean Sea. This occurred 2:07 server time.

You don't keep your shield when you go to Caribbean. Whether or not this is a bug or intended I am not sure, but it is not just you.
If you could keep a shield and take it to Caribbean, a major portion of the PvP aspect of the game would be removed, so I am pretty sure that's intentional.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
I have no problem with not using the shield in the Caribbean. I wanted it back when I was grinding... Not repeating that mistake.

You lost your shield because you went into a pvp event. Although you weren't attacking anyone, you still initiated a pvp event, thus the shield is removed just as if you were to attack someone.
The only possible thing about this that could be considered a bug of sorts is that there is no warning message that you will lose your shield like they have when you go to attack someone while your shield is active.
