No, there is no way for a Day 8+ character to recruit Maria.
So Maria is another one of those political type powers. You have to buy your way into power just like our crooked political figures have done for many years. Another ripoff for people who can not afford to pay for items in what is supposedly a free game made for fun.
Not a ripoff, especially if you didn't spend anything. Maria is not all shes cracked up to be first off... And secondly, what do you think pays for you being able to play the game for free? Plain and simple if you wanted Maria, you should have bought her. The 100 gems for 5$ alone is worth it compared to the rest of the package deals in game.

Be thankful that you can play the game at all if you do not pay. Whatever you get you are getting for free, so what is your complain?
