OK i am way too confused of which heroes should i use in my formation !!
up to now i was using smoulder, shad, Rhize and Downbringer.

Shayd is a good tank (natural dodge) and your main can play that role as well. If you are not using Maria, I recommend that you don't use another tank hero. Playing it defensive against a healer isn't the way to go if you can't heal your own troops yourself. What you want is to dish out a lot of damage. If you don't an enemy Maria will ruin any effort you put at landing damage.

As for your hero choice, Rhize is an improved version of Vipsanius Agripa, and Dawnbringer is an improved version of Knight Gawain. I think you could change Smoulder for another hero if you really want to change something in your formation. He isn't that great. I've seen people put him to good use, but he isn't really worth the invesment in the longterm. Agrippa could be good replacement for Smoulder in my opinion.

Here's an example fo what you could go for:

    Dawn, Empty, Shayd
    Agrippa, Main, Empty
    Empty, Rhize, Empty

This setup makes it that no piercing thrust or sweeping slash can hit two good hitters you have at the same time. Shayd at the top is likely to stun either a big hitter or a tank at the beginning of the battle, preventing them from using their skills, thus exposing you to less damage or your enemy to more damage. Rhize is more exposed than dawn and agrippa, but he has natural block skills, which makes him the logical frontliner when having to choose.

If you notice that Rhize is never allowed to act, you could use this setup, which makes Rhize hit first and Shayd second:

    Dawn, Shayd, Empty
    Agrippa, Main, Empty
    Empty, Empty, Rhize

If you wanna keep Smoulder because you've already invested a lot in him (such as 7 stars and a couple of saintings), you could move Rhize to Agrippa's place and put Smoulder in Rhize's current place, such as those two formations:

    Dawn, Empty, Shayd
    Rhize, Main, Empty
    Empty, Smoulder, Empty

    Dawn, Shayd, Empty
    Rhize, Main, Empty
    Empty, Empty, Smoulder

A lot of people won't agree, but mages make good tanks. This is because you can put a lot of defensive runes on them while still have enough offensive ones on them to make them good damage dealers. From my experience, they are quite good in that role.

I hope that helps. Make sure you use runes wisely to maximize the spirit of the formation. Obviously, morale, critical hits, physical and skill attack are key aspects of your big hitters. Dodge and Vitality are a must on everyone. Resilience is important if you have room left for it.
