Well I have spent a lot of money on this game and I know many of the high rollers have too in the total order of tens of thousands of dollars when you accumulate all the small purchases made over time. The only thing is, I can afford it, but regardless, I agree, this is a disorder and is an additive thing, and especially when you start to impact your life balance and things such as being able to go on family trips, impact the necessities in life (things for kids, etc).
When you find your self totally consumed by an on line game, and all you can do is spend time on the forums (like me and many of us), and do things out of character such as stay up later than usual to chat with people and do in game things... It does seem like this has spiraled out of control.
I myself am trying to do things in moderation moving forward. Just do my daily assistant activities and LAB's, chat less, forum less, and spend less and slow things down, but games such as this makes it hard to when there is competition; and trying to get out what you already spent into the same.. driving you deeper into making more and more investments.
