In the other hand, if it was set up so that the player's friends or guild mates wold know ahead of time and bet on the fight knowing the the obvious winner would loose, then it is an exploit.

What makes you think that isn't happening?
The game mechanics allow it and you know as well as any of us the extremes players will take to gain an advantage.
