Most people lv up there staff/sword first and then either their spirit or relic
It depends:
For tanks the relic is the most important piece of equipment. After that the other defensive pieces. I usually keep my relic 4 or 5 levels ahead of the other defensive equipment.
For meges, the staff and then defensive equipment. The Spirit does give a boost to magic attack, so you need to develop it too, but I have found that keeping the Mahe alive is important.
For attackers is a little more complicated. Early in the game the sword is the most important piece of equipment followed by the defensive equipment. As you start to get sets of 6 and the Heroes retain some of the morale, the Spirit starts to become important. Also, for Heroes such as Bloodstorm, that do not loose morale between fights, the Spirit is more important that the sword.

Agreed with what has been said here. You mostly need to upgrade your damage output to compete in banish events, which is why most people upgrade their swords first. As soon as you are capable of landing skill attacks in baal, upgrading spirit equipments becomes important.
Keep in mind that what helps you most in progressing is not success in PvP, but success in the heroic realm (better equipments) and in banish events (coins, credits, rep, chips and plans).
