Their hero star level is 9 and yours is 7, their hero rank is half angel 4 while yours is saint level 3 and they are level 108 while you are level 101. These are huge differences, especially the saint 3 to half angel 4. 7 levels and 2 stars are a pretty big difference as well. If you look at their hero on their profile it will show the power level for that hero. Look at that then yours and you will see a big difference. Save up credits and on tavern tuesday spend them all refreshing for double spirits. get his cards and sanctify him up to half angel 4 and see how yours compares then.

I do not have it but it was confirmed by several players whose opinion I trust.

I have confirmed that it is indeed related to star levels. I took my Bloodstorm from 4 to 7 stars and my opponents flavius suddenly started draining less morale from Bloodstorm than he was before.
