I think he was going with 20 gems per spin at the time, so 800 gems. Also, just because the gems could buy something at a greatly overpriced value, doesn't mean those things are worth that much.

Pretty much nothing except the stamina is worth spending those gems for (coins and credits could be gotten really cheap at the shrine)... and he probably didn't need those 1600 stam all at once.

I'd say his spins were relatively lucky though.
