To be honest this comes across as a rant rather than a constructive post. Building 6 sets and upping spirits on mages increases their magic attack. Yes the effect is less than on a physical hero but it all helps in the end. If you really want a powerful mage then build up their staff and max out your illuminated mind.
Regarding the last comment if you truly think Maria is a major game changer I can personally tell you she isn't. Good grief even with a lv12 preciseness she misses more than hits. It might be worth pointing out that she can be won via the Card Broker or Casino, so there is still a chance you can recruit her.
