I have noticed that this happens occasionally. I saw it today when Aphro stunned on the first hit bof the fight bu Cerb still killed my main that was positioned in front of him.

It indeed looks like a bug, I have had it happen on occasion. It is probably a display bug that they haven't noticed, hasn't been reported enough, or is low priority on the fix list.
