Open Question: Initiative... Order of merit.... Who strikes first?

I have read many of the helpfull hints and guides (especially Stickys excellent efforts) and have yet to find anything which defines who strikes first in an combat engagement and how it is determined. Anecdotally, it seems as though spellcasters go last with their attacks.... but I haven't observed a precedence for that either.
Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

That is the order in which heroes attack (one being first of course and 9 being last).

They attack from the front row to the back, and top to bottom within each row.

To clarify what Dawn seeker said. Unless the hero can attack multiple targets it will always attack the target that is in front of him (same row). If there are no targets in front of him then he will attach the row closest to the top that has targets starting with the target that is in front of that row.

Thank you all very much! Ummm.... one more lil question.... which side strikes first? Attacker or Defender? Or is it just 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, etc...

Always attacker. Then each hero on both sides strikes in order according to their position.
