I am definitely not saying that sell should be the same price as buy.
This is always different in any game I have played, and when you want to sell gear, you don't get that much except for specialty items.
However, the current difference to me seems weird.
Sidenote: This post is not about whether a jewel is worth 5000 gems, whether I should buy it or why one would consider selling one, reasons for that can be plentyful.

I agree that the 5,000 buy / 100 sell seems extreme, however this is probably done on purpose to prevent casino-abuse (low selling price), all the while still keeping the chips as something very valuable (high buying price).
Cuddles' Law: The volume of a player's whine is directly proportional to his/her VIP level.
Which is logical, if you think that differential is only since Casino was added. I don't, I think it's likely always been like that. Just so you don't collect and make much. I think what bothers me more is the power, as pointed out by TrollsWarrior. As much time and effort collecting, (buying or winning), as it takes to build them, the power addition should be more in line.
I think the sell price is there for the sake of completeness. Chips and equipment were designed so that you would not have to sell them. That is, you use your existing gear to upgrade into new ones. You don't get drops of new gear and have to choose which one to sell. This is the same for chips. Its value will always be there. You just keep collecting them to merge into higher levels ones. It was never meant as a source for coins.
