Chess player here (around 2280 and apparently that's a lot). Normally (in a swiss) the top ranked plays the top ranked in the second half (so someone around the middle). Second ranked plays the second in the second half...etc... and then the top ranked in the first half plays the lowest rank.

The new pairings are based off of both score, ratings, and colour (who went first)... and need to be generated after each round, rather than preset beforehand.

I never played in a knockout tourney in chess, so not sure what that's about. There are sometimes different sections in tournaments... or sometimes different sections just for the prizes (i.e. if you are 2000, you can play 2400 people but people U2000 can win the U2000 prize).
