You should play Free-to-play / Pay-to-win games as if you were going to a casino - spend only what you are comfortable losing. I assure you that if you did, you would simply move on when the game loses its appeal for any reason. No regrets and no anger.

Let's be honest, the game was a failure. If they had released this game years ago (like when they released Evony) it would have done much better. There was very little competition in this space back then. Not only are there many more browser based games now, but also many more F2P and mobile mmo games. From a business stand point, do you double down or cut your losses? Do you throw another million dollars into development and try to revive it or put that into a new project? When the number of players is this low, the choice is obvious.

As long as the game continues to generate enough revenue to pay for fixed costs, it will continue to run and minor updates will continue to be made. Just don't expect any major developments.
