its phys att x some random % between say 90% and 100%) + sk attack x some random % say between 90 and 100%) = total damage
then
another calculation is run to determine if the hit will be a crit. it is probably 2 separate calculations one to determine the attackers crit value and 1 to determine the resilience factor of defender.
if the calculation determines the hit is crit then damage is doubled
matt, you are correct.
however since none of us know the exact formula on how the damage is calculated with variables, resistances, hero presence, level, stats, damage penalties, etc and the developers wont tell us, i preferred to post a very simplified version to explain that physical attack comes into account even tho he is attacking with a skill.
ps@matt: i always assumed its 4 seperate calculations, not 2. i would appreciate if you could explain your theory if it wasnt "assumed"
I'm not sure on ideal stats, but I dont like defense on my hitters much. Skill defense is nice tho, and I think resilience is pretty good, as is HP. The high end CW PVP meta has barely no offensive mages at all, save Queen B who does barely no damage anyways and is used for her stun proc. The only reason to run magic resist in the case of Queen B, is if it reduces her stun chance, but I think magic defense just reduces queen b's damage... although I could be wrong.
I think the best saints are: (Bear in mind I'm not entirely sure of this, I'm theorycrafting here.)

I'm not entirely sure about break & block. Perhaps runes give enough of this to not merit having saints give more. Any opinions would be welcome. Dodge is another special case, where if you are faced with an opponent with a lot of hit rating saints like some of Blayd's toons, you need a lot of dodge saints for it to be useful, if at all. Imo, it might be better to have resilience, or hp, or some other saint that has a worthwhile effect if you find that you never dodge high end pvp players when you have extra dodge saints & level 12 dodge runes. Essentially the dodge saints become wasted slots, unless I am mistaken. I would love some comments and theorycrafting on this subject. Any thoughts?

1. Dodge (only if you have a lot of these saints)
2. Block (probably defends against most skills better than skill defense)
3. Resil
4. Hp
5. Physical Def (think this also guard against skill attacks?... I like it better for pvm as well)

Personally I like the special +15 stats (save morale) much better as the other stats could be achieved through gear rather than just runes and saints.
