i dont think that anyone who spends money on a game is sizing up the "expected lifespan" of the game they pick and accordingly to it they put a smaller or bigger amount into it.
players pay for gaming because they enjoy that particular game and think its worth the money or simply got "hooked". its like gambling, quite literally actually.
the only things that no one expects are that
- the game will close earlier
- the game will close at some point
- money isnt wasted because you are enjoying it
- to get any profit out of it (except thru scams or exploits)
its like the brand new couch i bought 5 years ago. it was really expensive and i enjoyed sitting on it before it wore out. i expected it to last for 20 years based on the price i paid but it lasted only 3. i however had one of those extended warranties to 5 years. only to find out that the furniture switched contractors and the customer service was trying to give me the run-around between 3 different companies. after a year battle over the phones i got a brand new couch, been comped with a free ottoman (1500), delivery costs, free throw pillows and store value cards adding up to another 250...
but that was for a real object and not for a game. this will NEVER happen to anyone in the game. no one will sue them to get their money back and no court will take up the case because all they paid for was to be allowed to use the "improved service".
even tho players are upset about the "slow death" and the fact of all communications channels turned off (and they where never great at communicating to begin with). i dont think anyone is expecting to get their money back nor thinks it will fall out of the sky if they "whine" enough about it.
the point of upset is about not giving us a notice or apologies, but giving false impressions by offering more packages, doing minor updates, stating they are working on it, etc ...
