I'd be interested to know how I would build the ultimate tank.
Firstly, what heroes make the best tanks? Is there a standout?
Runewise, I suppose it would need the three defence runes, along with block and dodge; But then, what others? Is vitality or morale required, or any of the attack runes? Would break or resilience take precedence over Hit Rating and Crit?
Gearwise, what is not so important?
Your thoughts on this would be muchly appreciated.

Depends on a lot of factors.
Where are you at in the game.
Wheres your server at.
Who are you fighting.
What heroes are they using.
What other heroes are you using.

ahmose and saffron are the best tanks in the game. while ahmose got the defense skill on physical and skill damage, his biggest weakness is magic (hr) and saffron is the better overall tank but slightly weaker. also your main makes a great tank too if you believe it or not.
best armor is ofc the best 6 piece armor set you have with the highest power, biggest chips and most HP. the same for the runes, except you want all defense runes (so on top of the ones you mentioned (endurance, reliability, block, dodge) you also want messiness, burliness and flint) and a preciseness rune because you dont want your tank to miss or get dodged when he/she casts the defense skill

Ahmose and Saffron are good tanks early on, however once you reach a certain point they become ineffective for 2 reasons 1. when players on your server unlock heroes like Rhize Adam and KT that can hit the heroes behind the tank before he dies. 2. You reach a point in the pve content were you need to use self healing heroes up front as the npc's have so much health your tank, no matter how heavy his defense is, will die eventually. Some heroes like Aphro and Bryne have built in resistance that makes them somewhat succesfull up front. In my opinion though the best thing to do is use heroes that have high base states of command strength and intelegence and star them up as much as possible. An example would be KT as his stats start of at 105 all so he gets a real good boost from stars. Aphro also has high base stats so she actually fits into both catagories although she can be countered by heroes like general al who has base magic resistance so you have to take that into cosideration also

@roush, whisp, kaku all have nice and valid points but that doesnt answer the question, that was about what the best tanks are and how to set up a tank. you all have nice and good meaning advice but he was asking a specific question not related to strategy or general game-play.

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense, so adam upfront could be best with all attack runes/gear kill them all before they have the chance.
Like I said there is no right answer depends on so many factors, the main being who ur attacking/defending from.
