What does merging of two Obsidians do?

I have two Obsidians, one a level 2 and one a level 3. One of the options is to merge them but I can not find any information anywhere as to what that does. Can someone please explain it to me?

What happens is that if you have 5 lvls 1 Obsidians, it will merge two 5 into 1 lvl 2.
And that's pretty much it.

When merging gem chips first you need to have 5 of the same 1. In the example Boroeast gave you in your inventory would need to exist 5 Lv.1 Obsidians. If that were the case you could go to the merge menu click on the group of 5 Obsidian and they would combine to 1 (one) Lv2 Obsidian.

You cannot merge gem chips of random levels. What I mean by this is if you have 4 Lv2 Obsidians and 1 Lv5 Obsidian you cannot merge them together. Anytime you are going to merge gem chips you must have 5 of the same gem chip at the same level in order to merge them.

And finally you cannot intermerge them (just putting this out there because someone is bound to ask), you cannot merge an emerald with obsidian, they must all be of the same gem chip family and level just to further clarify!
