Since yesterday you only get half of the stakes you won - defended or not during this 30 minutes...
It's been prooved from several other players more than once
- even if no-one attacks you to get his stakes back - it's halved.
And it has obvoiusly changed by designers as also shown in "help" when cursing over with mouse.

One has told me this is thought to be a "win-win"-act ... as shared between the players
- but if other part isn't online - no-one really "wins".
*scratching head* Well, except few VIP-players and Tynon... (attention - this is written ironically smiling)

In my opinion this has been made to get more players to pay for their characters "growing", as you don't have any opportunity to get the full stakes from winning battles in arena any longer.
