Guild Warfare

We need a guide or at least basic gameplay instruction for Guild Wars. It seems like our alliance was enrolled, then not enrolled, with no options to do anything but wonder what the heck happened.
One alliance member suggested that the enrollment might be a type of auction, where the alliances bid for the privilege of playing. While a nice idea, we assumed that a failed bidder would be allowed to rebid; clearly not the case.
So, tell us what we need to know prior to our needing to know it.
